Deluxe All Tube MC/MM Phono Stage
Introducing my new, hand made, phono stage. This special upgraded unit is as close to live as you will ever hear. As you can see from the feedback, the most common way this phono stage is described is as lifelike. If you want to be at the original recording venue, for a reasonable price, this is your only choice. As with all tube amps, the sound starts with the power supply. First the power supply is separated from the amplifier stage to insure a hum free operation. Much emi/rfi noise is generated from the power supply. Connecting it via shielded cables to a separate power supply results in dead silent operation. You can see from the pictures this unit uses a 274B rectifier tube. It blows away any other rectifier tube that I have heard, period. The original 274b was made by Western Electric. It has the largest, sweetest soundstage around. The power supply uses a choke input. This is the preferred method as stated in the Western Electric tube data. It is seldom used since it needs a more expensive transformer and is generally more difficult to implement. More bass and a stable power supply are the results. Finally, two large capacitors totaling 200uf deliver the bass, and clarity of your prized vinyl.
The heart of any phono pre is the accuracy of the RIAA curve. This circuit eliminates most of the surface noise from your records. It is very important that the components used in this section are matched and of the correct value. If it is wrong, frequencies that should be removed for quiet operation may not be correct. Both left and right channels must be exactly the same to achieve a perfect sound stage. No detail has been left to chance. Since this is a two gain stage unit, it comes standard with the ability to use either a MM or MC cartridge. When used with MM it just eliminates one of the gain stages. This allows many different options for future cartridge purchases. Just about any cartridge can be used now, or in the future. Custom loadings available. All resistors have been matched for a great soundstage. 4 X 12ax7 tubes are used for a crisp, clean sound. The top is left open for tube rolling.
