Passive Pre Amp
Most CD players, Phono stages, etc, output enough volume to run directly to your power amplifier. The problem is volume control and switching between different source supply's. This is where a passive pre amp comes into play. Because a passive pre eliminates almost all of the circuits and all the power sources of a regular pre amplifier the sound is much cleaner and detailed. Imaging and dynamics are enhanced by a good passive. We at Aural Thrills Audio are committed to this type of component due to the very obvious sonic advantages.
Not all passive pre's are created equal. Most use cheap pots (potentiometers) to control the volume. These pots ( Alps or any other brand) seriously degrade the sound quality because of the mechanical contacts they all use. The better alternative is to use a stepped attenuator. These use different value resistors to regulate the sound levels. Unfortunately, until now, these attenuator's were very expensive and so their use was limited. Aural Thrills Audio is using a new circuit board design that brings the price down to sane levels with all of the sonic advantages of a ladder stepped attenuator. As a bonus, it also doubles as a balance control. The volume is controlled by three switches. The center switch adjusts the volume on both channels in large increments. The top and bottom switches adjust the right and left speaker volume in 1db increments. The switch on the left allows the user to choose between four different input sources. In addition you can also use one channel as a home theater pass through.
