300B
Mono Block Set
Includes Both Amps

I am thrilled to introduce my world class 300B amplifies. Designed with only one goal in mind. Great sound. If you have purchased any of my other products you know that this unit will not disappoint. Putting out 8 powerful watts, this amp can drive most loads. I use it on 91db speakers with no preamp and use only half of its power. It is really a mighty mite and is manufactured completely in the USA. Service and advise is just a phone call away. It is available with 120/240 volt operation, 4, 6, or 8 ohm output.
I can offer this amp at a low, direct to buyer price because I cut out the middle man. This saves you $1000's on such a high quality unit. The design itself allows a low price without any skimping on parts quality. Construction details include only top line parts. All circuits are hard wired. No circuit board is used. The signal tubes are 7044, 5687, or 6900. These are well know audiophile tubes. The transformers are custom wound exclusively to our specifications using all American made parts. No one else has them. 6 H chokes provide the quietest possible operation with 5U4 rectification. Of course, being a single ended triode design, no negative feedback is used. Point to point wiring is included throughout and a minimalist design ethic is employed. It is as close as you can get to just a wire and a tube. The 300B was the source of sound for the first talkies. If you look at old films you will see "sound by Western Electric."
What makes this amp different?
I have personally listened to SET 300B's in many different configurations. Fixed bias, with DC filament heating, the quietest and the worst sounding. Cathode bias with DC heating, not bad. My favorite for this amp is cathode bias with AC heating. AC heating offers a super rich tube sound. Most, if not all companies only offer DC filament heating power. Please go to the Western Electric web site. http://www.westernelectric.com/index.html They are the original designer of the 300B tube. I talked with the CEO of Western Electric and he personally recommend AC filament heating be used for this tube. If the Western Electric calls for AC heating of the filament, why do most companies not do it this way? The reason is that most builders do not know how to make AC heating quiet so they use DC even though it does not sound as good.
The power supply is very important and most companies use a Capacitor input supply system. It allows the use of a cheaper transformer and no choke. A choke input systems needs a bigger transformer and heavy duty choke which adds to the cost considerably. The results are much better bass, quieter operation, more linear operation, and cooler running amongst other positives. (see quote below directly from Western Electric) If you want to hear what a 300B is supposed to sound like, this is the only amp for you.
Effect of Filter (directly quoted from Western Electric web page)
"It is evident from the regulation characteristics of Figures 4 and 5 that for
a given output current and voltage, the choke-input filter requires a somewhat
higher alternating voltage applied to the plates of the tube than the
capacitor-input filter. With the capacitor input filter, however, the normal
charging and discharging of the capacitor each half cycle requires the tube to
supply relatively large peaks of current during each charging period. The peak
current increases in value as the capacitance of the capacitor is increased
and may be much larger than the average rectified output current, though its
duration in such cases is only a short fraction of a cycle. Since for good
tube performance, the anode current must be considerably less at every part of
the cycle than the total emission current from the filament, the maximum
permissible output current must be limited to such a value that this condition
is satisfied. The permissible output current may be larger, therefore, for a
choke-input filter, in which the peak anode current is only slightly larger
than the output current. The choke-input filter also gives much better
regulation than the capacitor-input circuit.
The choke-input filter, therefore, should always be selected in preference to
the capacitor-input filter wherever possible. With a capacitor-input
filter, the capacitance of the input capacitor should preferably not exceed 4
microfarads."
