This amplifier has been designed by a tube amp master, Gary Dodd of Dodd Audio. The amp can drive speakers with a 87db rating to very acceptable levels. I use it on 91db speakers with no pre amp and use only half of its power. It is really a mighty mite and is manufactured completely in the USA. Service and advise is just a phone call away. It is available with 120/240 volt operation, 4 or 8 ohm output.
I can offer this amp at a low, direct to buyer price because I cut out the middle man. This saves you $1000's on such a high quality unit. The design itself allows a low price without any skimping on parts quality. Most mono blocks use another transformer as well as two rectifier tubes. The elimination of these parts save you over $400 but best of all creates a better amp. Talk about win win. By isolating the power supply from the output transformers you can achieve less hum and better sound staging. This great design allows you to save money and at the same time have better sound!
Construction details include only top line parts. Sonicap, Neutrik connectors, Halco resistors and more. A separate power box provides very quiet operation. The signal tubes are 7044 or 5687, your choice. These are well know audiophile tubes. The supplied pair of 300B's are the highly regarded Valve Art. The transformers are custom wound exclusively to our specifications using all American made parts. No one else has them. 10 H chokes provide the quietest possible with 274b rectification. Of course, being a single ended triode design, no negative feedback is used. Point to point wiring is included throughout and a minimalist design ethic is employed. It is as close as you can get to just a wire and a tube. The 300B was the source of sound for the first talkies. If you look at old films you will see "sound by Western Electric."
The power supply for the 300B filaments is AC. I can not emphasize enough the importance of this. Most amp builders switch to DC to reduce noise. The problem is that doing so completely takes the magic out of this legendary tube. It also shortens the life of your high dollar 300B tubes. The CEO of the Western Electric Company, (designer of the 300B) Charles Whitener, told me in no uncertain terms that DC should not be used for optimum sound. All Capacitors used in the power supply are top quality, which yields a very rich, open sound. Proper shielding, routing of wires, and a separate power supply box result in AC being very quiet and the sound is superior in every regard. DC is the easy way out resulting in a very thin sounding amp. You have not heard the beauty of this tube unless you have heard it with AC! I have personally listened to this amp in many different versions. Cathode bias, with DC filament heating, the quietest and the worst sounding. Cathode bias with AC heating. A little better. Fixed bias with DC heating. Second best sound. And finally fixed bias with AC heating. With out doubt this is the best sound. The original 300B which powered the movie houses used the legendary 274B for rectification. It results in a classic, rounded sound. If you prefer more bass and a more modern sound please specify 5u4 as your rectifier. With the 5u4 it is possible to use much more capacitance which results in more bass and transient attack.
